Ok, tonight’s exercise: I looked up some simple guidance on Garageband compressor and equalizer settings for podcast use. I applied the following to two recordings that I had recently made:
Channel Compressor Threshold to -17.0dB, Ratio to 3.1:1, Attack to 9ms, and Gain to 7.0dB.
Mastertrack Compressor Threshold to -15.0, Ratio to 2.0:1, Attack to 9.0ms, and Gain to 4dB
Then I outputed them via Share: Export Song to Disk, mp3, 64kbps. Then, to wordpress, uploading them into the media library. Then I created this page, tucking it under the “About” page. I think I will create these story-pages as posts so they show up in the array along with the other stories.
I found out that I lost a recording: The Man in the Red Shoes. I must have failed to save it after I had recorded it because it was just another copy of Jimmy Carter. No matter. I need to just record it again. I can use the practice.
I plan to keep going and record a story every day for the next week or so. I’m focusing on the routine of going downstairs, setting up, and talking. I’m not doing a lot of planning. I make just a little notepad sketch of my bullet points, then press “record”. I’m trying to record in one take or two, aiming for comfort, before I focus on lowering my error rate. Then I’ll re-evaluate. Maybe I’ll switch to more preparation. But for now, my hunch is I first need practice and familiarity to become more fluid with this off-the-top-of-my-head storytelling.
I’ll also pay attention to the audio settings later, as I go along. How do these two recording sound with regard to the audio level, noise, clarity, etc?
